Commercials for fast food are simply inescapable. We see them almost every time we watch television, flaunting their glossy burgers, fries, shakes, and whichever other product du jour they’re looking to hype up. Oftentimes these advertisements go in one ear and out the other, lucky to even elicit a "that looks tasty" from our subconscious (or, more realistically, from our kids).
But some commercials stick around for a little while longer. Whether it’s due to a snappy catchphrase, a creative storyline, a humorous spokesperson, or a catchy song, every so often these brands strike gold, and their commercial reaches that pinnacle that every ad executive dreams of: they enter the pop culture lexicon.

Almost everyone has some company motto or ad campaign centerpiece stuck somewhere in their subconscious. Think of the Coca-Cola polar bears, for example, or the Budweiser frogs. But when it comes to fast food, no other industry has worked so hard to capture the public’s attention through advertising dollars, and television advertising in particular. In fact, some might even forget that Ronald McDonald and his cast of characters, including the Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese, were invented solely to sell fast food to children.
In assembling our list of the top 10 fast-food commercials, our primary consideration was the level that they ingrained themselves into the public consciousness; the individual commercials that ranked the highest on our list were the ones whose imagery had some real staying power. For example, the phrase "Pizza! Pizza!" quickly associates itself with Little Caesars, but you’d be hard-pressed to recall the individual storyline of a Little Caesars commercial (and for that reason, it didn’t make our list). On the other hand, the phrase "Avoid the Noid" conjures images of not only Domino’s, but the Noid himself in the commercial. The top commercial on our list was not only effective, but extremely memorable and much-loved, and the lead actress even achieved a level of celebrity thanks to it.

Fast Food Mafia
Could their really be a more perfect pairing? Well, there might be, but it’s not every day that somehow, someone takes the world of Fast Food branding and infuses it with one of the most beloved movie genres of all time, the Mafia flick. Many of the most memorable fast food brands maintain imagery that we’ve grown up with for years, and have preceded us for decades. Playing upon this familiarity, artist Andrew Shirey took it upon himself to make an amazing connection between the brands and characters we’re used to, and remodeling them with a heavy mafia undertone. Everyone from KFC’s “Colonel Sanders” to the infamous Ronald McDonald is reinterpreted by Shirey. Here’s a tour:
On the far left (top), we have Robert “Jack in the” Box, an awesome re-imagining of Jack in the Box’s beloved clown. Shirey mentions that he was inspired by the recent Super Bowl commercials which showcased Jack being struck by a bus, falling into a temporary coma and getting facial reconstructive surgery for the second time. That same commercial campaign maintained amateur reports from concerned citizens that the entire incident may have been a hit job involving “The King” (Burger King) and “R. McD” (McDonald’s). This guy definitely fits the bill.
To the right of Jack, we have Ron “The Don” McDonald w/ Grimace and Birdie. In this piece, we definitely hearken back to the earlier ages of McDonald’s promotional materials through Ronald’s illustrious sidekicks. This is the first character that Shirey created in his collection, subsequently creating an awesome Internet buzz and a demand for the rest of the characters in full color.
To the right of the Don comes The Colonel himself. Shirey says this was the easiest of all the characters to create and execute. He says he barely did anything to him, “save for changing his suit gray and adding pinstripes”.
Next on the bill, representing Taco Bell is “Chihuahua” Carlito. It’s not a stretch to find out which gangster film this man came from, imagine Tony Montana of Scarface…but he’s hopped up on Spicy Lava Sauce rather than an insane amount of nose candy. In Shirey’s descriptions for this man, he musingly explains that Chih is indeed a junkie, a “junk food junkie”.
To the right of Carlito we have “Baby Face” Bob, the muscle behind the Quizno’s family. At first I didn’t understand what “Baby Face” Bob had anything to do with Quizno’s, and then I was reminded of their campaign a few years back where they enlisted a talking infant named Bob to promote a few sandwiches for them. I guess Bob grew up, and stayed gangster.
Next up is “Little” Caesar, easily my favorite character out of all the fast food families. For The Godfather fans, this guy definitely bares similarity to the plumpy Clemenza character. I’ve always seen Little Caesars as a very unintimidating, lowkey pizza spot…especially in comparison to the big shots over at Pizza Hut and Domino’s. Yet, according to the new QSR reports of the nation’s top fast food brands according to total sales, the Caesars family clocked in at a respectable #26, just ahead of the Long John Silvers family, and a few clicks behind the Panda Express clan. I guess the irony is running rampant, and “Little” Caesar is still moving plenty of products.
B.K. “The King” of the Burger King family. Imagine a Colombian drug lord mixed with a robber baron, and the voice of Señor Esteban Vihaio from Kill Bill 2. For the record, B.K. is not a pimp. I can see him being quite the contrary character to Ron “The Don”, especially if their families ever got involved in the same industries. Oh, wait…
To the right of the King is the unwilling heir to the throne, “Wendy” Gwendolen. Shirey took to a more Victorian aristocrat vibe in her design, with a hint of Southern belle to compliment the Wendy’s brand. Last in the row is “Papa” John, modeled after Papa John’s founder John Schnatter. Things look like they’re going pretty well for John…or maybe he’s just the type to hide it extremely well.
“PANDA” CHERNG and Pan-Pan are the seemingly ruthless button men (and woman) for the Panda Express dynasty. Considering Andrew only had the logo of their panda to go off of, this is definitely an interesting trip into the logic behind the company’s branding (wether intentional on Panda Express’ behalf or not).
The concept behind the next couple, Troy “the Trojan” and Katie lies in inspiration from the Sonic’s drive thru brand. Though B.K. wasn’t a pimp, doesn’t mean there isn’t a pimp in the group. Troy is definitely holding it down for the “quick service” industry. Katie is apparently one of his “roller hoes”, making Troy the legitimate dealer of women in the group. Pimp. Daddy. He’s not here for the titles, let’s be serious, he probably has a wife and 2.5 kids at home.
Rounding out the group of Fast Food Mafia Families are The Subway Boys and “Queen” D.Q. The Subway Boys are probably the most psychologically and image-appropriate of the bunch. Shirey worked with the idea of Jared Fogle, Subway’s true life “fat-gone-skinny” spokesperson. With the Subway Boys, we see a fat and thin version of the twin brothers. Notice the thinner Subway Boy’s suspenders. I guess the sudden weight loss didn’t translate fast enough in his attire. As for the “Queen” D.Q., she was inspired by D.Q.’s red-lips branding and drag queen makeupry (is that a word? spell check is telling me it isn’t). I guess they serve more than just frozen treats over at the Dairy Queen.
What took Andrew Shirey a week to accomplish has already found its place on the Internet as a cult favorite. Appearing on several mainstay blogs and garnering tens of thousands of views is just a small insight into the quality and longevity of this piece. I hope this is just a continuation in a long line of accentuating the art found in food, and food that can be considered art. If that sounds corny, it probably is. As one of America’s favorite foods, burgers remain a popular item to sample at different locations around the country. Those who love the burger will often attempt to discover where the most delicious burgers can be found. With such cheap prices, fast food chains entice many to taste their menu items. 2. Five Guys’ Little Bacon Cheeseburger
Often compared to In-N-Out, this originally East Coast chain offers equivalent quality in the tastes of their burgers. Fans of Five Guys laud the restaurant for the variety of choices when picking out a burger. The typical manner to order the burger is to have it “All the Way.” This means getting mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, tomato, lettuce, pickles, grilled onions and mushrooms in addition to the meat.
When purchasing the Little Bacon Cheeseburger, you’ll be receiving one patty, hence the “little,” with bacon and cheese. You can also decide between extra toppings, such as jalapeños, relish, barbecue sauce, green peppers, and hot sauce.
Though the Little Bacon Cheeseburger has a higher price at $4.69, you get what you pay for. The burgers tend to be larger and taste fresher in comparison to other chains. Accordingly, many consider the Five Guys’ cheeseburger to be the best fast food burger in the U.S.
3. McDonald’s Big Mac
Found in pretty much every city in America, McDonald’s remains one of the top locations to buy a burger. Top 10 Most Common Ingredients in Fast Food
Order a meal in any fast-food restaurant, and you'll likely walk away with a sandwich, fries and a drink. If you had to identify the ingredients of this meal, you might list beef (or chicken), lettuce, tomato, cheese, ketchup, bread, potatoes and soda. Not complicated, right? Wrong.
Burger and chicken joints don't think of the building blocks of a menu item as ingredients. They think of them as components, which are made of ingredients. For example, McDonald's famous Big Mac jingle -- "two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun" -- suggests the sandwich has seven components. Would you believe it has 67 ingredients?
Clearly, fast food is more complicated than it looks. Many menu items contain processed foods, which have been modified from their natural state for safety or convenience. Processed foods tend to have multiple additives to keep them fresher longer. Across an entire fast-food menu, there are thousands of ingredients, ranging from the commonplace (water) to the exotic (xanthan gum).
Considering that some of these ingredients have been implicated in serious health issues, it would be good to know which are the most common. We've set out to answer that very question. We started with menus from five popular fast-food chains -- McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, KFC and Arby's -- did some tallying, then cross-matched our findings with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's list of common food ingredients and colors. The result is the top 10 most common ingredients in fast food, organized by the type of ingredient and what it does.
Up first is the most common preservative.
10. Citric Acid: The Most Common Preservative
Salt has been used for centuries to preserve meats and fish. It works to inhibit the growth of bacteria cells, which lose water and become dehydrated in salty environments. Over the years, food scientists and manufacturers have discovered that other chemicals also can serve as preservatives.
Citric acid, an organic acid found in many fruits, especially limes, lemons, and grapefruits, is one of those chemicals. It increases the acidity of a microbe's environment, making it harder for bacteria and mold to survive and reproduce. It can also be used to bind to and neutralize fat-degrading metal ions that get into food via processing machinery.
What's great about citric acid is that it does all of this without harming the organisms that ingest it. It occurs naturally in all living things and is an important intermediate chemical in a metabolic pathway known as the citric acid cycle, or Krebs cycle. As a result, citric acid doesn't cause side effects in 99.9 percent of the population and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in foods and beverages [source: Driver]. Maybe that's why the chemical appeared 288 times on the fast-food menus we surveyed.
The next item on our list -- high-fructose corn syrup -- doesn't fare as well in the court of public opinion.
Citric acid has lots of company. The following preservatives also appeared frequently on the menus we analyzed: sodium benzoate (122 times), calcium propionate (64 times) and ascorbic acid (52 times).
9. High-fructose Corn Syrup: The Most Common Sweetener
Fast-food restaurants have many different ways to sweeten beverages, baked goods and condiments. Sucrose, or sugar, reigned as the traditional sweetener for years until food scientists began to synthesize sugar substitutes. Saccharin arrived first, followed by aspartame and sucralose.
A more significant revolution came in 1957 when two scientists worked out a process to manufacture high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Since then, HFCS has evolved into the sweetener of choice, finding its way into a myriad of foods and beverages. In our survey of fast-food menus, the chemical appeared as the first ingredient almost twice as much as sugar.
So what is it and why is it controversial? The process to make HFCS involves changing one simple sugar -- glucose -- in cornstarch to another simple sugar known as fructose. The product, a combination of the two simple sugars, is just as sweet as sucrose, but much cheaper to process. It also acts as a preservative, extending the shelf life of foods. No wonder it's one of the most ubiquitous ingredients in fast food.
Unfortunately, some research has shown a link between HFCS and obesity. At the very least, many beverages and processed foods made with this corn-derived sweetener are high in calories and low in nutritional value.
Color additives, like the one we're about to cover, also have bad reputations.
8. Caramel Color: The Most Common Color Additive
When it comes to the psychology of eating, food has to look good if it's going to taste good. That's why fast foods contain color additives -- to prevent the loss of a food's inherent color, to enhance color or to add color when it doesn't exist naturally. Hardly a single fast-food menu item doesn't have at least one artificial color buried somewhere in its ingredient list.
Common additives include Yellow No. 5, Yellow No. 6 and Red No. 40. According to one source, Red No. 40, which finds its way into jellies, pastries and those neon-red maraschino cherries perched atop your Chick-fil-A shake, is the most widely used food dye in America. This same source says Yellow Nos. 5 and 6, which provide the golden glow to cheeses, pudding and pie fillings, and soft drinks, are the second and third most common food colorings, respectively [source: Women's Health]. But when we analyzed the ingredients of five popular fast-food menus, we found caramel color to be even more common.
Caramel color is the dark brown material that results from carefully heating food-grade carbohydrates. Just think of the color of sautéed onions (a process known as caramelizing, by the way), and you'll get a good idea of this particular hue, although it can range from reddish-brown to light yellow. Contrary to what you might think, caramel color has no significant effect on the flavor profile of the finished product.
The same can't be said of the next item on the list.
Red No. 40 even sounds like it might be bad for you, which is why fast-food chains and food processors are always looking for other, more natural additives, like annatto. The additive comes from the Central and South American plant Bixa orellana and can look yellow if it has more of a carotenoid pigment known as norbixin. If it has more bixin, another closely related pigment, it can look reddish-orange. Annatto appeared 59 times across the five menus we surveyed.
7. Salt: The Most Common Flavor or Spice
In terms of frequency, salt -- or sodium chloride -- appeared more times on the fast-food menus we surveyed than any other ingredient. It's not always first, but it's always there, even in sweet foods (shakes and sundaes, for example) that don't seem salty at all.
Fast-food chains use salt primarily to make their meals more palatable. It's paired with pepper to season hamburgers, and it's a major ingredient in bread, ham, bacon, sausages and cheese. A single slice of American cheese, in fact, contains 250 milligrams of sodium. That makes a double cheeseburger, a popular fast-food item, especially salty. The McDonald's version of this favorite contains 1,150 milligrams (1.15 grams) of sodium [source: McDonald's USA Nutrition Facts].
Most health experts warn against eating too much salt, pointing to studies that show a link between sodium and high blood pressure. The government recommends a maximum of 6 grams of salt per day for adults, 5 grams a day for children between ages 7 and 10, and 3 grams for children between 4 and 6. Compare that recommendation to a typical family meal from KFC, which delivers a whopping 5.2 grams of salt per person [source: BBC News]!
Even if you cut down your salt intake, you have to be on the lookout for other sources of sodium. Our next ingredient is a prime example.
6. Monosodium Glutamate: The Most Common Flavor Enhancer
Monosodium glutamate, or MSG, earned its reputation in Asian takeout kitchens across America, but almost all fast-food restaurants use the flavor enhancer to some extent. Interestingly, MSG has no distinct taste itself. Instead, it amplifies other flavors, especially in foods with chicken or beef flavoring, through processes that scientists don't fully understand.
MSG is the sodium salt of the amino acid glutamic acid and is just one form of glutamate, a chemical that exists naturally in many living things. In fact, Asians historically used a broth made from seaweed as their source of MSG. Today, the food industry obtains the white powder through a fermenting process involving carbohydrates such as starch, sugar beets, sugarcane or molasses.
The safety of MSG has been in question for many years. In 1959, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified MSG as a "generally recognized as safe" substance. Then, in the 1980s, researchers began to wonder whether chemicals in the glutamate family could harm brain tissue based on studies that revealed glutamate's role in the normal functioning of the nervous system. An extensive FDA-sponsored investigation has since determined that MSG is safe when consumed at levels typically used in cooking and food manufacturing, although two groups of people -- those who eat large doses of MSG on an empty stomach and those with severe asthma -- may experience a set of short-term adverse reactions known as MSG Symptom Complex.
No such complex is associated with the next ingredient on our list.
5. Niacin: The Most Common Nutrient
It seems strange that fast-food chains would add nutrients to our extra-value meals. Doesn't food already come with a natural supply of nutrients? Broccoli, for example, contains significant levels of many essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamins C, K and A. Of course, broccoli isn't generally found on a fast-food menu. In the place of fresh fruits and vegetables are scores of highly processed foods. Manufacturing these foods often has the unwanted side effect of eliminating key vitamins and minerals, which then have to be replaced in a process known as enrichment. Fortification is the companion process, which adds nutrients that may be lacking in the diet.
Wheat flour is one of the most common processed items in the world of fast food. It is used to make plain buns, sesame seed buns, corn-dusted buns and specialty buns of all shapes and sizes. The wheat flour found in all of these bread products has been enriched with several vitamins and minerals, including riboflavin, folic acid and iron. But the most commonly added nutrient is niacin, or vitamin B3. Niacin is water-soluble and constantly eliminated from the body through urine. That means you need a continuous supply of the vitamin in your diet. But you don't need to eat bread products to get your recommended daily allowance. Poultry, fish, lean meats, nuts and eggs also contain plenty of niacin.
Up next is another ingredient that enjoys widespread use in fast-food fare.
4. Soybean Oil: The Most Common Oil or Fat
Drive around America long enough, and you're bound to see a soybean farm. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 75 million acres (30 million hectares) of farmland were used in 2008 to grow soybeans, resulting in 2.9 billion bushels of crop [source: U.S. Soybean Industry Statistics].
What happens to all of those soybeans? Many are crushed and mixed with solvents to extract soybean oil -- a fast-food staple used for deep-frying and as a key ingredient in margarine, pastries, cookies, crackers, soups and nondairy creamers. Some ingredient lists describe it as soybean oil, others as vegetable oil.
Soybean oil contains several unsaturated fatty acids, which means their component molecules have fewer hydrogen atoms. Unfortunately, unsaturated fats don't have long shelf lives. Hydrogenation, or forcing hydrogen gas into soybean oil under extremely high pressure, eliminates this undesirable characteristic. But it also leads to the creation of trans fatty acids, which have been linked to heart disease.
Scientists have recently developed varieties of soybeans that produce oils low in unsaturated fats. As a result, this new and improved oil doesn't require hydrogenation. Fast-food restaurants are slowly embracing trans-fat-free soybean oil, although hydrogenated oil is still widely used.
Food processors also use soybean oil as a starting point for other additives, including the two closely related ingredients we're about to cover.
Soybean oil appeared 355 times in our tally of fast-food ingredients, but it wasn't the only oil we found. Cottonseed oil made 86 appearances, followed by canola oil with 62 appearances and corn oil with 38. Canola oil, by the way, comes from the canola plant, a crossbreeding experiment from the 1970s.
3. Mono- and Diglycerides: The Most Common Emulsifiers
Cooks and food preparers have been working with emulsions -- two or more liquids that can't normally be mixed together -- for a long time. Fortunately for our taste buds, they've discovered several substances that encourage liquids to overcome their unwillingness to combine. These substances are known as emulsifiers.
Egg is commonly used as an emulsifier, but most food manufacturers today use glycerides obtained from palm oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil or tallow. Vegetable oils and animal fat contain mostly triglycerides, but enzymes can be used to break down triglycerides into mono- and diglycerides. These are the ingredients you see so frequently on fast-food menus.
Mono- and diglycerides allow smooth mixing of ingredients, prevent separation and generally stabilize food. You can find them in ice cream, margarine, baked goods, whipped topping and certain beverages. Luckily, glycerides pose no serious health threats, although they are a source of fat. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified them as a "generally recognized as safe" substance, indicating that experts consider them safe as food additives.
Next up, we have one of the most versatile ingredients in all of fast food.
2. Xanthan Gum: The Most Common Stabilizer or Thickener
In the 1950s, a chemist working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture began conducting research on an interesting new molecule. The chemist was Allene Rosaline Jeanes, and the molecule was dextran, a giant molecule made of thousands of sugar building blocks. Jeanes had great difficulty finding large quantities of dextran until a soft drink company came to her with a bottle filled, not with refreshing root beer, but with something slimy and viscous. Jeanes discovered that the bottle had become contaminated with a bacterium that produced dextran as a byproduct of fermentation. She isolated the bacteria cells and suddenly had a mechanism to produce all of the dextran she needed.
Jeanes also discovered another similar molecule that would become known as xanthan gum. Also produced by a bacterium -- Xanthomonas campestris -- xanthan gum is widely used by the food industry as a thickening agent. It's especially useful in salad dressings to help keep components like oil and vinegar from separating. Xanthan gum is not an emulsifier, however. It works by stabilizing emulsions, increasing the viscosity of the mixture so that the oil and vinegar stay together longer and so that spices stay suspended.
Xanthan gum also creates a smooth, pleasant texture in many foods. For this reason, it appears in ice cream, whipped topping, custard and pie filling. And the really good news: It's not associated with any known adverse effects.
Our final ingredient is not as exotic as xanthan gum, but it rules the roost when it comes to fast food.
1. Chicken: The Most Common Meat Product
We're just as surprised as you to list chicken, not beef, as the most popular fast-food meat, and to be honest, this one is tricky. In our analysis of several menus, chicken appeared as the first ingredient more than beef, pork or turkey. But that's a little misleading because many fast-food chains have more chicken-based menu items than beef. For example, McDonald's features chicken sandwiches, chicken nuggets, premium chicken strips, chicken snack wraps and a full line of premium salads topped with, you guessed it, chicken. If you talk consumption, though, you get a slightly different result. McDonald's bought 663 million pounds (301 million kilograms) of chicken in the U.S. in 2007, compared to 795 million pounds (361 million kilograms) of beef [source: Hughlett].
The future, however, is chicken. McDonald's 2007 purchases of chicken were up 59 percent from 2003, while its beef purchases were up just 10 percent over the same period [source: Hughlett]. Numbers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture bear this out: Chicken consumption more than doubled between 1970 and 2004, from 27.4 pounds (12.4 kilograms) per person to 59.2 pounds (26.9 kilograms) [source: Buzby]. Most of this growth can be traced to fast-food chains, where people like us step up to the register and order fried or grilled chicken -- and a hundred other ingredients that transform farm-fresh poultry into the fast-food chicken that we hate to love.

I think french fries deserve to be on this list they go with everything and tastes delicious. It's not that hard to cook and every fast place has them. No matter where you go in the country there's some french fries somewhere. Who doesn't love french fries. I will be surprised if I met somebody that didn't really like french fries. Unless it's a certain type of french fries.
Burgers can either be delicious or horrible. It can be nothing but grease, or have mucus-like cheese in them (I don't like cheese anyway) or have mayonnaise (which is OK) hanging in sticky lumps in the lettuce, which is the worst combination of food ever but on the other hand, a good beefburger, turkey burger or venison burger can be delicious, cooked as perfectly tender and thick meat, which goes excellently with fine mustard (depending on the mustard), grilled tomato or onion, or powerful chilli sauce. Food heaven.
It should be the same as pizza because burger have meat, cheese, vegetables, condiments, and fresh baked buns and pizza has dough, sauce, cheese, and a bunch of toppings. That is why I eat Pizza-Burgers all the time instead of one over the other.

Mmm, sizzling bacon- let me tell you something, only the legends will get it. I enjoy having breakfast in bed. I like waking up to the smell of bacon, sue me, and since I don't have a butler I have to do it myself. So, most nights before I go to bed, I will lay six strips of bacon out on my George Foreman Grill, then I go to sleep. When I wake up, I plug in the grill. I go back to sleep again, then I wake up to the smell of crackling bacon. It is delicious, it's good for me, it's a perfect way to start the day. Today I got up, I stepped onto the grill and it clamped down on my foot. That's it, I don't see what's so hard to believe about that.

Brownies are the best. Simple yet yummy and tasty. Once you tasted it, you will look for it and search for it to buy it and eat it. It's good for your stomach. Picky eaters will eat anything if it's in lasagna. It has an amazing texture and has layers upon layers of PASTA and CHEESE. It sorta has to be good if it has pasta AND cheese in it.
Lasagna is by far the best food ever. it has sauce and noodles and cheese. I have been eating lasagna since I was a baby. Italian food is the best. Pizza is my second favorite food which is also Italian.

Has always been my number 1 food for my whole life since I was really young and it always will be. Pizza is great as well, but pancakes are so enjoyable to eat because they're soft to bite, and you can put a variety of sweet substances on a pancake that makes you want to eat this delicious invention everyday. I get hungry whenever I think of pancakes. This should be number one (all day long), not this low. by the way, perfect food and absolutely delicious to eat. Great food!
I rarely eat them. Sometimes the family doesn't even celebrate pancake day. However, they are so delicious, especially my mum's own ones.

What Makes A TV Commercial Memorable And Effective?
Before I get to the point of my article, if you want to argue the point that TV advertising is dead and TV in general is dead and we'll all be walking around on moving sidewalks like the Jetsons in the next 5-10 years, fine. Just leave your thoughts in the comment section and I will respond in kind with a reply which essentially says "you're out of your mind."
Ok, now that we have that out of the way.
A few years ago I posed the following query: What makes a TV commercial memorable? And follow up question, is it the product you remember or just the commercial itself?
I was very curious to see what people thought when they saw a given TV commercial. Did they remember the spot itself? Did they remember the brand? Both? Kind of goes without saying that if you're a brand manager or brand marketer or advertiser, etc. if given the choice you would rather people remember your brand or product, right?

I received quite a number of replies to my query and I want to share some of them with you and I also want to see, based on your comments, if you think anything has changed in the years since I first asked the question.
The last comment ties in perfectly by the way with someone I wrote last year entitled "Social Media's Dirty Little Secret" which essentially said the same thing only in the context of social media. Doesn't matter how good you are at social media and/or advertising and marketing. What gets people coming back and becoming loyal customers is a) a quality product, service or ware and b) sold at a good price.
Here's some of the answers I received in their entirety:
- "Heart and or Humor. One that tickles the funny bone, makes you laugh out loud and call a person in the other room . "Hey, you've gotta come see this commercial . " On the flip side, one that pulls at the heart strings, or even at times rips the heart right out of your chest with power, energy or fear, causing you to pause and think. Makes you say "wow!" They only come along so often. Product is not always the most memorable part - think of how many times you've said, "I saw this great commercial, don't remember exactly what it was for, but . " I seem to remember product on the powerful serious spots - less so on the funny commercials where sometimes the punchline over powers product."
- "It is best done with an icon, a grabbing tag line, a memorable jingle, and humor, with the icon and the brand tied together. Examples: "Energizer Bunny" or "Tony the Tiger" for Kellogg cereal. To stand out and become memorable, it must be unconventional. The conventional is boring, and immediately forgotten, because it never engages the consumer."
- "If you don't remember the product or service, the ad is a failure. The ad should address a need, demonstrate how the product or service meets the need, and do it in a compelling, memorable way, with a device known as a hook. 25 years after it ran, people still remember Wendy's "Where's the beef?" ad. It is a great example of saying, "Wendy's burgers are so big, they stick out from the bun. The other guys' burgers are so small, you have to look for the patty!" Beautiful. Dang. Now I'm hungry for a Wendy's burger."
- "Generally for me, a TV spot has to score high in 2 areas to be memorable: sheer entertainment value and disruption/thought-provoking ability. That second category covers those few ingenious spots every year that go completely against the settled order of things to really achieve something different. As for whether I remember the product or just the commercial itself, that varies. But I bet you a dollar to a donut that those of us in the biz latch on to the sponsor probably five times more often than the average viewing Joe or Jane -- so if we're inconsistent in our recall, imagine how they do on that score."
- "Commercials that portray people getting hurt are most memorable, i.e. falling off the ladder, walking into the glass door, the football player hitting office workers. Interestingly, I can't say for certain which products they were pitching."
Getting hurt, falling you say? You mean like this one that's currently running for Sears?
By the way I love this spot for Sears. I love how it starts off one way then very quickly and quite humorously takes you in another direction. And no, it did not cause me to go buy an appliance from Sears but I did remember that it was for Sears in the first place.
- "It's just the commercial people remember. Many people (myself included) sometimes refer to the bunny as the Eveready Bunny. Don' think that's what the Energizer people want."
- "Stupid commercials are the most memorable, followed by funny ones. I tend to remember a commercial first then the product."
- "I produced commercials for ESPN for a few years. My experience as a producer and as a consumer tells me it's the commercial."

b.The client thinks the world is fascinated by his brand.
Effective TV advertising is all about the consumer and filling her needs: emotional, rational or both."
I think this last comment has a lot of merit. I absolutely think that a lot of copywriters - and creative directors and other various agency personnel as well as those on the client side have visions of Hollywood dancing in their heads when they conceive and create and produce many TV spots. In other words they are trying to inflate their own ego rather than focusing on what's really important - selling!
I also believe this last comment has merit from the perspective many clients/brands/advertisers have a distorted view of what the real world thinks of their product.
Depends On The Brand
Back in August my friend David Brier wrote a piece for Fast Company "What Every CEO Can Learn From Best Buy’s (Continued) Branding Mistakes." What David was referring to was Best Buy's new tagline "Making Technology Work for You” which he thought was horrible on many levels as did I.
The reason I bring this up is I thought the new Best Buy tagline was horrible for the simple reason they didn't need to be so literal. The have an established level of brand equity which earns them the right to be creative, fun, offbeat, wacky even in their tagline.
And I think the same holds true for advertising and in this case, TV advertising.
If a brand is well established - and those brands know who they are, that should afford them to be creative, fun, offbeat, wacky even in their TV spots. I'm not saying that if a brand has established equity they can do whatever they want. No, far from it. Brand equity is sacred and is earned for sure. There is a level of trust that is inherent in brand equity.
But a brand can still let it's collective hair down now and then, right?
The Sears commercial is a great example.
Do you really think someone who was considering buying an appliance made their purchase decision to buy from Sears or not based on that commercial?
Do you really think if someone who watched it then thought 'Well that commercial was terrible. I was going to buy a refrigerator at Sears, but not now."
Conversely if your brand does not have the equity of a Sears that does not necessarily mean they need to play it close to the vest. Heck no. Have fun. Be funny. Use humor. If applicable.
Just remember to convey your message so that someone watching it remembers you and your brand first. If they remember the spot too, that's a bonus.
One Final Thing
This is arguably my favorite commercial of all time. If not, it's in the top 10. You should instantly recognize it and even after all these years I still remember it AND the product.
